Your home purchase becomes a reality on closing day when ownership is officially transferred to you. These are the things you need to get done before getting the keys:
- Hire a legal professional to represent your interests and manage closing documentation.
- As part of my service I ensure your file is sent to your mortgage professional and lawyer to ensure a smooth closing.
- If you are renting, give notice to your landlord.
- Obtain a home insurance policy and notify your lawyer of the insurer.
- Arrange for your move requirements/obtain estimates from moving companies (book as far in advance as possible).
- Coordinate cancellations, transfers and a change-of-address notifications for medical, financial and contracted services, utilities, licenses, subscriptions, memberships and personal mail. You can also forward your mail directly from Canada Post to your new address
- Organize the connection of services and utilities at your new home. This can be done online.
- Meet with your lawyer on closing day to sign required mortgage and property closing documentation, pay associated balances and fees, and collect the keys to your new home.
